How do you get poison ivy?

You can get poison ivy by touching it or touching a surface that has been in recent contact with it. Touching any part of the plant can make you catch it.

Can you become immune to poison ivy?

There are some people who are immune to the poison who are very lucky. Unfortunately, this immunity does not last for life and can easily change so you must still exercise caution.

What happens when you catch it?

After a few hours from initial point of contact a itchy spot will develop. This will then develop further and get worse and then a rash will develop along with other symptoms.

What should I do if I know I have got it?

After about an hour of initial contact you can simply wash it off with water. Once all of the oil has been washed away and the rash develops then a hot shower can solve the problem of itching.

What can be done once the itching has started?

For more serious cases you will have to see a doctor and get the right medication. If it is not too serious you can go to a store and collect the correct drugs, lotions etc to treat the problem yourself at home.

How long can the rash last?

The rash that develops can sadly last for several weeks. It depends largely on the treatment that you use and how quickly you begin.

Is Poison Ivy contagious?

Yes it is. If you come into contact with someone who has it or another surface which has been in contact with the plant then the oils can spread to your skin.
